Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I have to be an expert musician? No. All skill levels are encouraged to learn how to use sound, music and vibrations. Even beginners! We do not care about your technique. We cater to those who might have physical problems playing your instrument in the 'traditional' way. In fact, we encourage SoundWerker to experiment with different techniques, ideas, patterns and sounds with your chosen instrument This course does not emphasize performance or skill level. We play our music as 'service musicians' not at performers. Please contact the director to chat more about this, if you have any questions.
Can I use any instrument? This course is only for plucked instruments such at harp, lyre, psaltery etc.
Where is the training located? Must I travel? No traveling is needed! The training is done live and on-line! You never have to leave your home.
Once I am certified, will I be qualified to play at the bedside in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and hospice? Yes - you will be able to play at the bedside in skilled nursing and resident care facilities and hospice. You will be trained and qualified to play relaxing, calming and meditative music in these facilities and in your own practice You will not be certified to play prescriptive clinical music.
How long is the course? The course starts on a Friday evening and will run the entire weekend. We should be able to wrap up the training by Sunday afternoon. However, there are many hours of practice after the course to be able to successfully hone your skills.
Benefits As a graduate, you are never alone. You will be able to take part in free on-line continuing education meetings. If you are on facebook, you will be part of a group of SoundWerkers to share and discuss ideas. You will also always have access to updated information and research on the website. You never have to pay for anything else to continue to learn the benefits of being a SoundWerker.
Will I receive a certificate? Yes. You will receive a beautiful certificate indicating that you are a Certified SoundWerker. You will be certified by Lynda Kuckenbrod, CHM, VAHTP, HSH, RM who is the creator and founder of the Original Therapy Harp Training Program. Lynda has thousands of hours as a clinical harpist and sound healer and is well qualified to train others to play soothing, relaxing and healing music for others.
Is this course accredited? There are currently no government standards in place for bedside/therapeutic/clinical/healthcare musicians, neither is there any organization, agency or board mandated by the government to regulate any bedside music program. There are organizations that indicate that they are a regulatory agency or board for bedside music however these organizations were created, developed and are currently run by the programs that created them. They are not regulated or accredited by an independent organization.
Soundwerk teaches you how to play soothing and relaxing music for groups and individuals. Playing music with love, compassion and empathy for others is a virtue. The willingness to learn the techniques of a SoundWerker and to offer your skills to others is a opportunity to share your love and compassion. However, training is advisable. Doing anything with love and positive intent is more necessary in this world than ever before.
There are indeed organizations to accredit, regulate and oversee Music Therapists. Music Therapists have many many years of in depth training far above any bedside music training program. They are subject to the regulations set for by the AMTA. If you are considering becoming a Music Therapist, please, contact the American Music Therapy Association.
What is the cost of SoundWerk? The tuition is only $395 if paid by check. You may pay by credit card or paypal with a $10 fee added for processing. Payment is required at the time of registration.
